evaluation

For this project we have created a short film. We started the process by doing some individual research, looking at short films and researching directors. We then created our individual proposal. My proposal was about a college student exploring the college and revealing a secret about the college and its staff. We then were put into groups and we decided which proposal we wanted to do. We decided to do a short film about a college student having his bag stolen and he chases the thief around the streets but eventually loses him. The thief opens the bag and the bag lights up.

For the first few lessons we watched a lot of short films and learned some new techniques like cross cutting editing. We watched different films some with dialogue and some with no dialogue at all showing that we can still make a good film with no dialogue. I didn't use any of the short films as inspiration when coming up with the idea for my film.

For the planning we knew the basics of what we wanted to do, We wasn't too sure about the locations we were going to use. We filled out all of the paper work that was needed, we knew all of the props we needed to use, It didn't take us long to create the storyboard since we knew all of the shots we were going to do. All of the research we did was primary research we did not use the internet or anything else to help us plan our film. We went out to find the locations and also in other lessons when we were out we found locations and thought it was a good place to do a certain scene. We had to fill out a health and safety form agreeing not to do certain things that could be dangerous. We filled out a location recce so detailing what the location was like. We had no issues dealing with private property or anything. The only issue with it being a public face there is traffic and a lot of people in the scenes. Also there would be a lot of noise but that could be edited out in the editing. We also put people in charge of what they needed to bring in, Like the props, booking the camera out, bringing the SD card. This worked well since we didn't forget anything.

The equipment we used on the day was, a camera, a tri-pod, SD card, we also used a simple bag as a prop. The filming went well however on the first time we had off stead in so we weren't allowed to go off and film we all had to stick together, This delayed our filming a lot since we had to go to other people's locations and we weren't going to use them locations so we had to wait until we went to a place we could use. Also we had to be careful on some scenes because there was cars around that also delayed some of the filming because we had to move out of the way. We had bad timing on the first day of filming and we ended up filming at break in the courtyard at college so it was pretty busy and there was a lot of people around so we had to wait for them to pass before we could start filming.

In the editing first we put all the shots in so we could see what we liked, what we want to take out and what we need to retake, We did a quick skeleton edit after the first day of filming so we knew what shots we still needed to take, after the second day we decided it was too short so we wanted to add some more shots. We started to play with the effects. We used the dip into black so the beginning would look better. We also flipped a couple of shots and spent a lot of the lesson cleaning up the work making sure it looked good. We added some of the music in, we thought it worked well with the shots.

If I was to do this project again I would have spent more time trying out different shots so we have a wide range to choose from, We stuck to the original idea and we didn't try anything else, if we had more time I would of tried out different shots at different locations. I would of also tried out different edits in the editing part, we stuck to the basics that we have used before we should of looked at different edits that we haven't used to see if they would work well. Overall I am pleased with how the film turned out.

Short film idea

My Film would be set in the college and a student who gets lost arrives at a secret room which looks like it has been abandoned. The student would reveal a secret about the staff at the college. I dont know what kind of props would be used it depends what is available at the time and what we can fit into the story. There only needs to be one actor or maybe more if we have one of the staff confront the student however this will be harder to shoot since we cant really have someone play an adult.

I am not sure what the student would reveal yet and idea I have had is that someone in the college is hiding evidence of a criminal act in the abandoned area of the college,

Evaluation tips

1. Overview- for this project we were asked to....
- researched short films
- individual proposal
- put into groups and chose which film we wanted to do

2. Primary + secondary research- what did we do and why- details on how specific work inspired me, Additional research, images

3. Planning and pre production- brainstorms, ideas, plans, specific paperwork- pull out specific examples, use terminology, final production schedule.

4. Production - Name the equipment used, what did we have to do before we filmed, make sure we
had a tri-pod, an SD card, how did the filming go

5. Post production- finalising work, edits and adjustments.

6. What would I do differently if I was going to do the project again.

7. Peer feedback- 2 people minimum

Sometimes when the developers are creating a game they like to add secrets for the player to find. They are usually called Easter eggs. There are games that have become famous for creating Easter eggs like the grand theft auto games. This could be used when doing the game character design we could give them an Easter egg like a reference to another game or film.

This secret location would look good for a short horror film. It makes you wonder what has happened in this place, and it could be used to tell a creepy story of the locations dark past.

Film Noir is used a lot films that are to do with detectives, crime and thrillers. I think its only effective when the film is set in the right time period. I don't think it would work well in an action film unless its showing a flashback.

Another secret is in Call of duty blacks ops where you press certain buttons on the controller while in the main menu and you can break out of the seat that the character is sitting in and move around the room and also go onto a computer which you can type in cheats for the game.

filming

We had to improvise a lot today, We had to use locations that we thought was ok, we didn't really have time to look at the best locations but I think that we used what he had to the best of our abilities. We got quite a lot of shots done today but we have a few left to do next week. We will take time next week to find locations where there is not so many people and cars. We had to be careful in one of our locations because there were cars coming around the corner delaying the filming. We used a street in the lace market, and we used the courtyard. We did the courtyard scene at break so there was a lot of people leaving the college. In the locations we weren't using we were practicing the chase scenes making sure we were ready for when we filmed. We didn't waste any time. It started to rain when we was filming the chase scene, we thought that this would look even better for the footage. There is one shot that we would need to retake but the rest went well, We know what we need to improve on next week so we will be able to go and film quickly.

The good points are that we improvised whereas most people gave up when they were in the same situation, we stayed positive throughout and we got some good shots.

The bad points were that we didn't have enough time in our location we felt rushed, We had bad timing and we have to retake a few shots.

age rating for our film

As a group we decided that the best age rating for our product would be a 12A. It was either a 12A or a 15 in our film there was no reason that our film should be a 15 because there is no physical violence or strong language. We thought that 12A would be better since it would be the adults choice if they want their kid seeing our film. I think that since there is no strong language, sex or violence there is no need for it to be higher than a 12A.

age ratings

The first ever film to be given the 12 rating was Batman in 1989. The reason it was given this rating was because it was a lot darker than the cartoon Batman. They thought that the Joker would be too scary for younger children. They originally thought it should be a 15 but young teenagers who was its target audience would not be able to see it, thats why they created the 12 rating.

The exorcist was submitted to the bbfc in 1974 and was given the rating of X. But with the video recordings act in 1984 meant the bbfc had to decide if this film was suitable for a video classification in case a young child got their hands on it. So they decided to not release the film with a video classification and it was taken off sale therefor no one could watch the film at home until 1999 when they gave it the 18 age rating.

Jurassic Park was the first film to be given the pg rating. They wasn't sure what to do with this film because they enjoyed it and thought it was a good film for kids but they noticed there were some disturbing scenes. They invited children to view the film and see what they thought, most of them said the film was good and scary whereas some said that the film was too scary for them. The bbfc had to think this through they didn't want to give it a 12 or a 15 because people under that age wouldnt be able to see it, so they came up with the rating pg and said "contains sequences which may be particularly disturbing to younger children or those of a sensitive disposition"
